Erotic stories are about the stimulation of the imagination, both for the author and for the reader as well. The author is able to explore and articulate their own idealized sexual fantasies and put them into their own words, and allow readers a glimpse into someone else's sexual imagination and to get some idea about the sexual fantasies that exist in other people's minds, as well as having those new ideas or fetishes implanted into their mind where they can either be rejected or take growth.
